1. The Tour Bus. So; We've been working into the wee hours of the night, lately, trying to get unpacked from our recent trip from California. Most of the boxes are unpacked or stashed in the basement for later unpacking. We had hoped to sleep a little late Saturday (4-30-05) to make up for lost time, but my brother Scott, who teaches at Purdue, was in town and dropped by early with coffee and doughnuts. So I splashed water on my face and combed my hair and we sat in the breakfast room, which is an enclosed porch, and has windows on three sides. Scott was dressed, and I was in my white terry-cloth robe. As we sat and sipped and talked, a large tour bus rounded the corner and slowed in the street that separates the house from the river. The driver started talking into a microphone and several of the people on the bus stood and took some pictures. I smiled at Scott's puzzled look and reminded him that the house is a historic site: the birthplace of silver screen star Carole Lombard. In fact, the neighborhood is in the national registry. We turned to the bus and waved. More people in the bus stood and waved back. Several more cameras appeared, and some lucky tourists got really good pictures of, um, someone. Just another day in the lives of the rich and famous! (HA-HA-HA!) Rick |
